Sophie Demery

Scotland

Demery is an artist and printmaker based in Edinburgh, Scotland. She completed a BA Hons in Illustration at the Edinburgh College of Art in 2018 where her fascination with the sea gradually became the focus of her practice, which concentrates on printmaking and books. Since graduating Demery has won the inaugural Edinburgh College of Art Bookmarks Prize for innovative use of the book form, for my degree show collection of artist books and zines responding to nautical narratives. More recently she was awarded the Pittenweem Arts Festival Bursary Award 2019 which enabled Demery to display her work in a setting perfectly suited to its maritime themes.

Often research and location based, my work is made up of a combination of printmaking, collage and digital processes: creating minimal, considered compositions, sometimes with a hint of humour. A preoccupation for all things nautical has led to past projects which cover subjects including ocean currents, flashing patterns of Scottish lighthouses and Scottish fishing folklore. I am interested in the natural environment for its potentially dramatic and changeable nature, and also with the interactions of humankind with the natural world. Usually taking the form of a print or a book, my work is subtle, delicate and ambiguous but sometimes it can be bold, graphic and colourful. Text often features in my work, and I try to find a narrative even where there doesn’t appear to be one.
